Why is Health Insurance Important?

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007

It has been said that nothing is more important than your health, and there is a lot of truth to that saying. Among other things, a loss of health can mean a loss of earnings if you are not able to work, and it can also mean medical bills that are extremely expensive. Health insurance can help you avoid some of those costs and it can also help individuals to lead more healthy lives by paying for preventive measures such as regular check ups and immunizations to name just two.

There are several means by which an individual can get health insurance. A person may pay for his or her own insurance. A person may receive health insurance as part of an employment package. A person may receive health insurance through local or Federal programs.

In many instances, there can be a combining of the premiums paid. What that means is that, for example, an employer might pay a certain amount of the medical insurance premium and the employee pays the remainder of the premium, usually through payroll deduction. In other cases, an employer or government entity may pay the full amount of the premium.

As with all types of insurance, health insurance comes in many forms and is available at differing levels of coverage. The best case scenario would be if an employer paid the full amount of the monthly premiums and there were no co-pays or deductibles charged to the patient. This type of coverage is rare, however, unless you are extremely well placed in a company or you are living below the poverty line.

Most consumers will be in a co-pay system of health insurance wherein they are responsible for a certain amount of the bill and the insurance company will pay the rest. As you might imagine, there are many different levels of coverage in these arrangements as well.

Normally, the more money the patient is required to pay from his own pocket at the time of the medical services, the less the monthly premiums will be. For those individuals who are relatively healthy and have a reasonable income this might be the best option for health insurance. For those with a limited income or for those who have health problems this can be a difficult option to live with as the co-pay or deductible of each medical visit will need to be paid for out-of-pocket by the patient.

The importance of having health insurance should not be dismissed or underestimated. Rising medical costs can wipe out a lifetime of savings with just one major medical event. Even the most routine of surgeries can cost tens-of-thousands of dollars, and more sophisticated procedures can easily run into the hundreds-of-thousands of dollars. Health insurance can help pay those skyrocketing cost and help save you from financial ruin.

Before selecting a health program to participate in you should read the contract carefully and understand all of the terms and conditions that are in it. If you are unsure about any of them, ask your employer or the insurance representative for clarification.

Term life insurance

Understanding term life insurance

Life insurance is designed to protect your family and others who depend on you for financial support.

Term life insurance is the original form of life insurance and is considered to be pure insurance protection as it builds no cash value compared to permanent life insurance such as whole life, universal life, and variable universal life.

If you die and lose your income, the people that are dependent on your financial support will lose that income, so life insurance can help cover either a percentage of or all of that loss depending on the policy you have taken out.

While term life insurance is catered towards people with families, there are instances where life insurance can still be beneficial even if you have no dependents. For example, the insurance could be used to cover the cost of your own funeral.

Term life insurance provides coverage for a limited period of time and after that period, the insured can drop the policy or pay annually increasing premiums to continue the coverage.

Term insurance works in a way similar to most other types of insurance in that it satisfies claims against what is insured if the premiums are up to date and the contract has not expired.

For example, car insurance will satisfy claims against the insured in the event of an accident and a home owner policy will satisfy claims against the home if it is damaged or destroyed.

Although term insurance is a death benefit, its primary use is to provide cover for financial responsibilities of the insured. Those responsibilities may include (but are not limited to) consumer debt, dependent care, tuition fees for dependents, and mortgages.

A simple form of term life insurance is a policy spanning a term of ten years. The death benefit would be paid by the insurance company if the insured died during the ten year term, while no benefit is paid if the insured dies one day after the last day of the term. The premium paid is then based on the expected probability of the insured dying in that ten year period.

The problem with taking out term life insurance for only a short period is that if you state of health deteriorates during that period you might find it difficult to obtain replacement life cover after the term has expired.

While term life insurance is considered by some as a necessity, it is not compatible for everyone. Most people only take out life insurance once they are married or have had children. But, as said before, even if you have no direct dependents, the insurance can cover the costs of your death and or any left debts that you wouldn’t want your parents paying off.

Importance of Accident Insurance for Travel

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007

Fifty years ago when families traveled on vacation or to see relatives, they never worried about what would happen. Traveling by air was limited to families that could afford it, while the worst thing traveling by car was children fighting in the backseat. However, today things have drastically changed. Air flight is more common now than ever, and world travel has become even more prominent. Travel has also become more uncertain as terrorist attacks and political unrest in certain locations have left individuals worrying about their safety. While travel to any destination can’t provide complete certainty and safety, some companies are offering accident insurance for travel to put consumers’ fears at ease.

Accident insurance for travel is a great idea, especially for individuals planning to travel outside of the United States. You never know exactly what is going to happen, thus it is best to always be prepared. Not only does accident insurance for travel cover emergency situations, but it also ensures that you actually get where you want to go.

Individuals who purchase accident insurance for travel don’t have to worry about their trip getting canceled. The insurance will reimburse them for the money they lost. This can be a huge relief due to the fact travel can cost thousands of dollars. A cruise is an example of a great time to purchase travel insurance. Hurricanes, storms and flu breakouts on a ship can all result in trips being canceled. If you have travel insurance you can easily get your money back. Travel insurance is also a good idea for individuals or groups traveling to the Middle East or other areas in the world where political unrest could cause your trip to be canceled or delayed.

A medical emergency is another reason many individuals choose to purchase accident insurance when they are traveling. You never know when there will be an accident leaving you injured or when you will get sick during a vacation. In the event you need to seek medical attention, accident insurance can cover it. This can be especially beneficial if you travel outside the United States where you aren’t covered by your regular medical insurance.

In addition to covering medical emergencies and canceled trips, travel insurance also covers other things that may happen on your vacation. For example, if your luggage gets lost by the airport you can get reimbursed for its contents by your travel insurance.

Finally many individuals and families purchase accident insurance for travel to help them relax while they travel. You can have peace of mind while you travel knowing that no matter what happens you will be covered. This sense of security can mean the difference between you enjoying your vacation and spending it constantly worrying about what could go wrong.

If you are planning to take a vacation soon, you should check into the cost of purchasing accident insurance for travel. While the price may be more than you wanted to pay, it can be well worth the cost in the event something goes wrong on your vacation.
